Read a Simple Melody

From Patterns to Melodies

In the previous lesson, you learned to follow notes as they move up, down, or repeat.

When notes are joined together, they can form a melody — a sequence of notes that creates a musical idea. You already have the skills you need to begin reading one. Instead of treating every note as a separate puzzle, look at how the notes connect and move across the staff. For example:

C → D → E → D → C

You can read the individual notes, but you can also see the overall shape: the notes move up and then come back down.

Think in Shapes

As you read a melody, try to notice both:

• Which notes you are playing
• How the melody is moving

Recognising these patterns will gradually make reading music feel more natural.

Look Before You Play

Before you start playing a melody, take a moment to look at the music first.

You do not need to name every note immediately. Start by looking at the overall shape of the melody.

Ask yourself:

• What is the starting note?
• Do the notes move up or down?
• Are any notes repeated?
• Does the direction change?

For example, look at this pattern:

C → D → E → E → D → C

Before playing, you can already see that the notes move up, repeat, and then move back down.

Make It a Habit

Try to look through each short melody before putting your hands on the keyboard. Even a few seconds of preparation can make reading and playing easier.

Find the Starting Note

Before you play a melody, first find the starting note.

Look at the first note on the staff and identify it before placing your finger on the keyboard. This gives you a clear starting point and makes the rest of the melody easier to follow.

For example, if the melody begins on C, find Middle C on your piano before you start playing.

Once you know the first note, look at what happens next. Does the melody move up, down, or repeat?

Look at the first note of a short melody before playing anything.

1. Identify the note on the staff.
2. Find the matching key on your piano.
3. Get your finger ready.
4. Then look ahead to see where the melody moves next.

Follow the Melody

Once you have found the starting note, look at how the melody moves from one note to the next.

You already know how to recognise notes moving up, down, or repeating. Now use those skills while following a complete musical phrase.

For example:

C → D → E → D → C

Start on C. The melody moves up to D, up to E, then back down through D to C.

You do not need to stop and think about every note separately. Use the first note as your starting point, then let the shape of the melody help you follow what comes next.

Before playing a short melody:

1. Find the starting note.
2. Follow the notes from left to right.
3. Notice each change in direction.
4. Then play the complete pattern slowly.

Look Before You Play

Before you begin:

• Find the starting note — E.
• Look for places where the melody changes direction.
• Notice the repeated E – E in measure 3.
• Look at where the melody finishes.

Then read and play the phrase slowly from left to right.
