Musicians write notes on a set of lines called the staff.

Notes Can Sit on Lines

A note can sit directly on one of the five lines. The line passes through the middle of the note.

Notes Can Sit in Spaces

Notes can also sit in the spaces between the lines.

Notes Can Move Up and Down

When notes move upward on the staff, the sound usually moves higher.
When notes move downward, the sound usually moves lower.

On the piano, higher notes are found to the right. Lower notes are found to the left.
