Your First Two-Hand Piece

You’ve played a melody with your right hand and practised your left hand separately. Now it’s time to bring them together.

In this piece, your right hand will play the melody while your left hand plays just one note at a time.

Don’t worry about playing quickly. The goal is simply to get both hands working together.

Get Both Hands Ready

Your hands will use the same five note names, but they begin in different places on the keyboard. Use the guide below to find both positions before you start playing.

Left hand

Start on the C one octave below Middle C.

C = 5 · D = 4 · E = 3 · F = 2 · G = 1

Right hand

Start with your thumb on Middle C.

C = 1 · D = 2 · E = 3 · F = 4 · G = 5

Remember: your left-hand little finger starts on the lower C, while your right-hand thumb starts on Middle C.

Try the Left Hand First

Play C with left-hand finger 5 and keep the key down while you count four steady beats.

Add the Right Hand

Play both Cs together, then keep holding the left-hand C while the right hand continues.

Can You Play It Without Stopping?

Playing two different things at once can feel unusual at first. That’s completely normal — coordination improves each time you practise it.

position both hands on the keyboard
play notes with both hands at the same time
hold a left-hand note while the right hand moves
move the left hand between C and G
play a short two-hand piece from beginning to end
