Before You Play

  • Find the first note.
  • Look for notes moving up and down.
  • Notice repeated notes.
  • Keep a steady beat.
  • Play slowly enough to keep reading.

Place your right hand over C, D, E, F and G. Keep your hand relaxed and let one finger rest over each key. Use these finger numbers:

  • 1 — C
  • 2 — D
  • 3 — E
  • 4 — F
  • 5 — G

Keep your thumb relaxed on C and avoid stretching the hand. Your fingers should stay close to the keys as you play.

This is your first complete piece to read from written music. Before you touch the keys, take a moment to look through the whole score.

Find the starting note. Notice where the melody moves up, moves down, and repeats. Then play slowly and keep your eyes moving ahead through the music.
