Notes Can Move

A short introduction explaining that a melody can move higher, move lower, or repeat the same note.

Moving Up C → D → E
The notes move higher.
Moving Down G → F → E
The notes move lower.
Repeating E → E → E
The note stays the same.

Notes Moving Up

When notes move higher on the staff, the sound usually moves higher too.

Look at this pattern:

C → D → E → F → G

Each note is placed a little higher than the one before it. On the piano, you also move to the right as the notes get higher.

Remember: Up on the staff = higher sound.

As notes move upward on the staff, their sound gets higher.

NOTES MOVING UP & DOWN

Which Way Are the Notes Moving?

Look at the notes from left to right. Are they moving up or down?

Example 1 of 2

Notes Moving Down

When notes move lower on the staff, the sound moves lower too.

Look at this pattern:

G → F → E → D → C

Each note is placed a little lower than the one before it. On the piano, you also move to the left as the notes get lower.

Remember: Down on the staff = lower sound.

Repeated Notes

Sometimes the notes do not move up or down at all. They stay in the same place on the staff.

For example:

E → E → E

Because each note is written in the same position, you play the same piano key again.

When two or more notes appear in the same place on the staff, the pitch stays the same. Play the same key again each time.

Remember: Same place on the staff = same note.

The first three notes repeat. Then the notes begin to move up.

Up, Down, or Repeat?

Notes can move up, move down, or stay in the same place.

Look at each pair of notes from left to right and decide what happens to the second note.

NOTE DIRECTION

Up, Down, or Repeat?

Look at the two notes from left to right. What happens to the second note?

Follow the Shape

When several notes are written together, they create a shape on the staff.

You do not always need to identify every note first. Look at how the notes move from left to right.

For example:

C → D → E → D → C

The notes move:

Up → Up → Down → Down

This is an important reading skill. As you become more comfortable reading music, you will start to recognise these shapes more quickly.

Remember: Look for the direction of the notes: up, down, or repeat.

FOLLOW THE SHAPE

What Shape Do the Notes Make?

Look at the three notes from left to right. Which shape do you see?

Read and Play

Now follow the shape of the notes and play what you see.

Before you begin, look across the whole pattern. Notice where the notes move up, move down, or repeat. Then play the notes slowly from left to right.

READ AND PLAY

Melody Direction Challenge

Now put everything together.

Try to follow the shape of the melody instead of reading each note in isolation.

Remember: Look first. Follow the shape. Then play.
