Meet a New Symbol

In the last lesson, you learned that music can be written on five lines called the staff.

But a staff usually needs another symbol to help us understand the notes written on it.

One of the first symbols you’ll meet is the treble clef.

Remember: The treble clef appears at the beginning of the staff and helps us read higher notes.

What Does the Treble Clef Look Like?

The treble clef is easy to recognise once you know its shape.

It is a tall, curved symbol that wraps around the lines of the staff:

You’ll see it at the beginning of many pieces of piano music.

Which of these symbols is the treble clef?

Treble Clef and the Piano

On piano, the treble clef is commonly used for notes in the higher part of the keyboard.

Your right hand often reads treble-clef music, especially in beginner pieces.

For now: You’ll usually see the treble clef connected with the notes you play with your right hand.

The Treble Clef Has Another Name

The treble clef is also called the G clef.

Look closely at the symbol. It curls around the second line from the bottom of the staff.

That line represents the note G.

Remember: The treble clef is also called the G clef because it curls around the G line.
