Remember the Note Values

Before you begin, remember:

β™© Quarter note = 1 beat

𝅗π…₯ Half note = 2 beats

𝅝 Whole note = 4 beats

A longer note does not make the beat slower. The steady beat continues while you hold the note.

QUICK RECAP

Compare Note Values

Compare how long each note lasts. Press Play to hear the difference.

Quarter note 1 beat
1
Half note 2 beats
1 2
Whole note 4 beats
1 2 3 4
Choose a note to hear its length.
Remember: A half note lasts twice as long as a quarter note. A whole note lasts twice as long as a half note.

Count the Rhythm

Now combine different note values.

Start with this rhythm:

β™© β™© 𝅗π…₯

Count:

1 β€” 2 β€” 3 β€” 4

The quarter notes each use one beat. The half note begins on beat 3 and continues through beat 4.

RHYTHM PRACTICE

Count the Rhythm

Look at the rhythm and work out how many beats it lasts altogether.

Rhythm 1 of 6 Score: 0

How many beats does this rhythm last?

Remember: Quarter note = 1 beat Β· Half note = 2 beats Β· Whole note = 4 beats

Listen & Follow

Next, listen to the same kinds of rhythms.

Watch each note as the steady beat continues. Notice that quarter notes change on every beat, while half notes and whole notes continue across several beats.

Tip: Keep counting quietly while you listen.

LISTEN & FOLLOW

Listen & Follow

Press Start and follow the notes. Keep counting the steady beat as you listen.

Rhythm 1 of 6
72 BPM
Ready. Count 1 – 2 – 3 – 4.
Listen for this: The beat stays steady even when a note lasts for more than one beat.

Clap the Rhythm

You don’t need the piano for every rhythm exercise.

Press Start, listen to the count-in, then clap or tap the rhythm while counting aloud.

For example:

𝅗π…₯ β™© β™©

Count:

1 β€” 2 β€” 3 β€” 4

Clap on 1, hold the first sound in your mind through 2, then clap again on 3 and 4.

This reinforces an important idea: you do not make a new sound on every beat when a note lasts longer than one beat.

RHYTHM PRACTICE

Rhythm Challenge

Follow the rhythm and tap when each new note begins. Use the Tap button or press the spacebar.

Rhythm 1 of 6
72 BPM
Press Start when you are ready.
Remember: Do not tap again while a half note or whole note is still being held.

Play the Rhythm

Now try the rhythms at the piano.

Place your right-hand thumb on Middle C. Use only Middle C so you can concentrate on rhythm rather than finding notes.

Start with:

β™© β™© 𝅗π…₯

Play:

C β€” C β€” C

The first C lasts one beat, the second C lasts one beat, and the final C lasts two beats.

Then try:

𝅗π…₯ β™© β™©

and:

β™© 𝅗π…₯ β™©

Keep counting 1 β€” 2 β€” 3 β€” 4 as you play.

Quick Check

Before moving on, check that you remember the three note values.

QUICK CHECK

Check What You Remember

Answer 10 questions about the beat, note values and the rhythms you have practised.

Question 1 of 10 Score: 0

Great work! You’ve practised combining different note values.

You can now count and play short rhythms using quarter notes, half notes and whole notes while keeping a steady beat.

Then the next numbered lesson can introduce the quarter rest as something genuinely new.
