Lesson Progress
Before You Play
This piece uses only notes and rhythms you already know. Before you begin, take a moment to look through the music instead of starting immediately.
You will see quarter notes, half notes, a whole note and quarter rests. Remember that the steady beat continues through every note and rest.
Get Ready
Place your right hand in the familiar five-note position:
1 – C · 2 – D · 3 – E · 4 – F · 5 – G
Keep your hand relaxed and leave your fingers resting lightly over the keys.
Look at the Rhythm
Before worrying about the pitches, look at the rhythm.
You already know:
Quarter note ♩ = 1 beat
Half note 𝅗𝅥 = 2 beats
Whole note 𝅝 = 4 beats
Quarter rest 𝄽 = 1 silent beat
The important thing is to keep the beat moving. A longer note does not stop the count, and neither does a rest.
For example:
♩ ♩ 𝅗𝅥
Count:
1 – 2 – 3 – 4
The half note begins on 3 and continues through 4.
Find the Tricky Measures
Now look through the entire piece before playing.
You don’t need to read every note in advance. Instead, look for places where the rhythm changes.
Ask yourself:
Where do I need to hold a note?
Where do I need to stay silent?
Where does the next measure begin?
This small habit will make reading music much easier as the pieces become longer.
Count Before You Play
Try the rhythm once without the piano.
Tap a steady beat and count:
1 – 2 – 3 – 4 | 1 – 2 – 3 – 4
When you reach a half note, continue counting while you hold the sound.
When you reach a quarter rest, keep counting but do not play.
The beat should never disappear.
Play the First Rhythm Piece
Start slowly. Keep your eyes slightly ahead of the note you are currently playing and continue counting throughout the piece.
Play the Piece
Read the music from beginning to end. Listen first if you like, then connect your MIDI keyboard and play the piece.
Practise in Three Steps
Don't worry about playing the whole piece perfectly on your first attempt.
1. Count it
Read through the piece and count aloud without playing.
2. Play it slowly
Play the notes while continuing to count. Pay particular attention to the half notes and the quarter rest.
3. Play from beginning to end
Try to continue even if you make a small mistake. The goal is to keep the musical pulse moving.
This is an important change from the earlier exercises: you are now practising continuity, not just individual correct answers.
Quick Self-Check
After playing, ask yourself:
- Did I keep counting through the half notes?
- Did I stay silent during the quarter rest?
- Did I keep the beat moving from one measure to the next?
- Could I continue after a small mistake?
- Did I finish without losing my place?
You don't need a perfect performance before moving on. Try the piece a few times and notice whether it becomes easier to keep the rhythm steady.
You’ve played your first rhythm piece.
You used familiar notes while reading quarter notes, half notes, a whole note and a quarter rest in 4/4 time.
More importantly, you kept reading from one measure to the next instead of treating every note as a separate exercise.
