Meet the Left Hand

Learn how to position your left hand, understand its finger numbers, and play your first notes with it.

Meet Your Left Hand

Until now, most of your playing has focused on the right hand. In Level 04, your left hand will gradually become part of your playing too.

The left hand uses the same five finger numbers as the right hand:

1 — Thumb
2 — Index finger
3 — Middle finger
4 — Ring finger
5 — Little finger

The important difference is what happens when your hand is placed on the keyboard. Because your left hand points in the opposite direction, finger 5 is farther to the left and finger 1 is farther to the right.

Your left-hand fingers are numbered from 1 to 5. Explore the hand, then answer the questions below.

Place Your Left Hand

Sit comfortably at the keyboard and let your left arm and hand stay relaxed.

Place your left-hand little finger (5) on C. Then let the other fingers fall naturally onto the next four white keys:

5 — C
4 — D
3 — E
2 — F
1 — G

Remember: C is now played with finger 5 instead of finger 1.

Find the C below Middle C. Place left-hand finger 5 on that C, then let fingers 4, 3, 2 and 1 rest naturally on D, E, F and G.

Play C–G with Your Left Hand

Now play slowly from C to G:

C – D – E – F – G

using:

5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1

Then come back:

G – F – E – D – C

using:

1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5

Don't worry about playing quickly. Keep your hand relaxed and let each finger stay close to the keys.

Keep Your Hand Relaxed

Your left hand may initially feel less comfortable than your right hand. That's normal when you begin asking it to work independently.

Keep your fingers gently curved and avoid lifting them unnecessarily high above the keys. Play slowly enough that you can stay relaxed.

You don't need speed yet. The goal is simply to become comfortable finding and playing C–G with the left hand.
